‘I guess that ‘Mac gettin’ eaten’

McDonald’s working with TBWA France launched this new ad campaign with simplified visuals (they call them “pictos”) of their food products.

That’s it. Those are the print ads. Recognizable – but not exactly appetizing. However, on that note, neither was their song choice for the TV spot.

The campaign includes a short video of a band of McVandals painting the town with these pictos. The soundtrack? Azealia Bank’s ‘212’.

To say the lyrics of this song are a little inappropriate would be an understatement. And since this is a family blog (not really, but my mom reads it sometimes), I’m not posting the lyrics, but you can go check them out here. (Not you, mom. You wouldn’t like it.)

Sure they just used the intro of the song and none of the lyrics… but knowing the song, I can’t help to think of the chorus in my head while I watch this spot. And that makes me laugh… uncomfortably.

Rotton Apples

As if Mondays weren’t depressing enough, I have come across the worst Apple commercials ever made. Yes, it’s finally happened. Apple has released a series of painful commercials that make you feel moderately embarrassed for everyone involved. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, because our first ad “Mayday” has 300,000 views – and 1,200 dislikes. The comments were disabled for all of these spots. I guess Mac fans may have been a little too expressive with their feedback.

If you’re still here, you’re clearly a sucker for punishment. Either that, or in shock, which is perfectly understandable. Now we’re going to watch “Basically”. Another spot in the series that basically makes me want to punch myself in the face just so it will end sooner.

And last up is “Labor Day”. Good luck trying to make it through this one.

So what’s wrong with these ads? Pretty much everything. First off, this is not the brand that Mac fans know and love. I would expect something like this from Microsoft, not Mac. Both the writing and acting is unbearably cheesy. And the scenarios, well, I can’t even begin.

Sorry to say, but TBWA\Media Arts Lab totally missed the mark with these ones.

Dream the Impossible Dream

Fact: men like beer.

Fact: Australian men REALLY like beer.

So then why would Canadian Club whiskey decide it would be a good idea to publicly shame Australian beer drinkers into switching their choice of beverages? Betty Ford only knows.

Created by The Works, Sydney, in their new campaign, Canadian Club just stops short of calling beer drinkers fat, stinky, farty, gross and dumb.

Oh, and in addition to the above, beer drinkers are also boring and have launched an assault on common decency.

This approach is all wrong. Canadian Club is a great product, enjoyed by many. But it shouldn’t try to, nor would it ever replace beer. That would be the impossible dream. And insulting your target audience is no way to achieve any amount of success. Insert sad trombone here.

Head over to Canadian Club’s Australian YouTube page if you need to see more.

How To Tell If Your Creative Team Is On Drugs

First, they come to you with this idea:

And you’re like “Are you guys high? This is the worst pile of garbage ever! It totally objectifies women and has some very lazy sexual innuendos.”

And they’re all “We’ll just remake the same ad with men so it will even it out. That way we’re objectifying everyone, or some shit!”

And you go “OK” because apparently you’re on drugs too. Then you laugh hysterically at your brilliance and reach for another donut.

These bad choices were brought to you by Attik, USA for the Scion, iQ.

A Door By Any Other Name

As I was scrolling through my Google Reader yesterday, I came across this ad campaign for the Opel Meriva. The tag line? “Embrace Life”. The ads focus on the exciting, new rear-hinged passenger FlexDoors®’ which open to almost 90 degrees. Like arms open and ready for an embrace.

But does anyone one remember what these used to be called? Suicide doors! Hey Amsterdam Worldwide, did you guys do this on purpose? Embrace life with suicide doors?  Just another thing that leaves me scratching my perfectly shaped head. Roll the clip.

Live Webcast Fail

This video has been going around for a couple weeks now. I have watched it at least ten times. My favourite part is when this poor guy screams in sheer frustration/confusion and embarrassment. Other people’s pain always makes for a great Youtube video. Enjoy:
