Big Ideas Take Balls

The Knacki Ball. There is no actual way to make these look remotely appetizing.

The Knacki Ball.
There is no actual way to make these look remotely appetizing.

I was doing some research today for offbeat marketing ideas and I came across this concept by BBDO, Belgium for Herta, which is a brand of pre-cooked Frankfurters, owned by Nestlé. (Gross, but okay.)

Herta launched a limited edition version of their frankfurters, shaped like little soccer balls. They built and placed a vending machine to give away free meat balls in a high traffic area. But in order to get their prize, people had to play a soccer match inside the vending machine – the world’s smallest soccer stadium – against Belgian football legend Leo Van Der Elst.

Setting aside my disgust for room temperature hot dog balls, and sadness for the former football legend stuck in a vending machine, this is a really fun idea!

What came first? The chicken or the licken’?

There’s this restaurant in South Africa called Chicken Licken. And their advertisements are pretty funny thanks to director, Trevor Clarence and Net#work BBDO. (Yes. That is a hashtag in the middle of their name. Don’t get me started.)

Don’t Do it Yourself

Many summers ago, I was laid-off from a job. I had gotten a good chunk of severance money – I think it was about five months worth. Great, right? No so much. After the first week, was indescribably bored and longed for a job. It probably didn’t help that I was living in the suburbs at the time.

I decided that, to keep busy, I would try finishing my unfinished basement. After all, if there are books on dry walling at the local hardware store, it shouldn’t be that hard, right? Several hundred dollars and big, fat mess (me) later, I came to the realization that DIY is not for everyone. And it is worth it to just hire someone. That was a very expensive, very messy lesson to learn. Needless to say that the basement never got finished… in fact, I would use a different F word to describe the state in which I left it.

Maybe that’s why I laughed out loud at each one of these new Lowes ads, by BBDO, New York. I know what these people are feeling.

Did you know: Potatoes can be Cannibals?

Funny – albeit kind of sick when you really break it down – commercial for Lay’s potato chips by Energy BBDO, USA.

Your Mom Does What?

I’m off to Quebec City for an extended long weekend tomorrow morning. It’s going to be -25 degrees Celsius (-13 F). So if I don’t freeze to death, my next post will be on Tuesday. But don’t fret, my pets. Mommy’s plan is to drink enough so that her blood alcohol is such that it would be impossible for her to freeze. Just like the French Québécois do! (Oui?)

Anyhow, before I leave you, here’s a dreamy little spot from GE, entitled ‘Childlike Imagination – What My Mom Does at GE”. This ad, created by BBDO, NYC employs a Tim Burton-esq look and feel. The score and the visuals are pretty epic. Nice work.

I’m Kind of a Big Deal

This looks like it would have been a fun spot to make – minus all the “side-effects” talk.

Play To Learn

I love these posters for London’s Museum of Childhood – they encourage kids to learn through play.

This campaign was created by AMV BBDO, London. The illustration is cool, eye-catching, and fun, and it was done by illustrators Lesley Barnes (Balloons and Imagination), LouLou & Tummie (Japanese), and Till Haffenbrak (Genius & Mind).

They’re Just Peices of Meat

New World is a grocery store in New Zealand. Working with one of my favorite agencies, Colenso BBDO New Zealand, they created the following two ads. They’re fun, lighthearted, show the benefits of the product, and even get a chuckle. My favorite is the “hubby’s” face in the ‘master butcher’ ad.

It’s Not Like I Buy My Own Nibbles

Here’s the second spot by BBDO TO for the Ontario Ministry of Health which tackles the issue of ‘Social Nibbling’.

You may recall the first spot about Social Farting?
